At Larkmead Vets, we benefit from the depth and expertise of a large team of vets. Several of our vets have undergone post-graduate training in specific disciplines and we are fortunate to have clinicians who are RCVS Advanced Practitioners in both surgery and medicine. Our breadth of experience means we can offer treatment for more complicated cases that many other practices would refer, without the overhead of a dedicated specialist centre.
Comprehensive investigations and treatment are possible for a range of conditions including cardiology, dentistry, internal medicine, emergency and critical care, neurology, oncology, soft tissue and orthopaedic surgery.
We continuously re-invest in modern diagnostic aids such as ultrasound scanners, endoscopes, X-ray machines and laboratory equipment to give our clients accurate rapid results. Should patients need to stay with us for any period, we have separate dog and cat hospitalisation facilities at both our Didcot Park Road and Cholsey branches. Our own vets and nurses provide 24-hour care for any patient admitted to the practice.
We are happy to accept surgical referral cases from clients not currently registered with us from other veterinary practices. If you would like to discuss a particular soft tissue or orthopaedic referral, please contact us to arrange an appointment.
Surgery undertaken, and not exclusive to:
Although the costs for surgery will vary according to the complexity of the surgery required, you can look at some example pricing of procedures available at Larkmead here. Many of our veterinary team that have undertaken enhanced surgical training are experienced in carrying out procedures that some veterinary practices may refer to specialist centres. A tailored estimate for your pet can only be offered after examination by one of our vets. Please contact us to book an appointment for a review with the appropriate vet.
As well as routine procedures such as neutering, we regularly carry out a range of more complex operations. At Park Road, Didcot, there is a purpose-built orthopaedic suite. We regularly undertake cruciate surgery, luxating patella correction and fracture repair operations, ranging from simple to more complex cases.
All patients undergoing surgery are fully monitored before, during and after anaesthesia by our experienced nurses.
We understand that booking your pet in for surgery can feel worrying. We are here to answer any questions you may have and will explain what you will need to do before and after their procedure. During their stay we will keep you updated on their progress and make sure you are fully informed.
We have the equipment and expertise to manage a very wide range of medical conditions including cardiology, dermatology, ophthalmology, endocrine disorders, infectious disease, oncology and gastrointestinal conditions. We regularly monitor ongoing cases both with the support of the vet and nursing team to ensure your pet gets the best care possible.
All pre-booked patients will be admitted by a vet on the day of their procedure. At this appointment, your pet will be examined, any questions you may have will be answered, and the procedure confirmed. You will be asked to sign a consent form and provide contact details for the duration of your pet’s stay.
Please note: Unless otherwise specified all dogs and cats should be starved from midnight the night before their admission, however water can be left freely available. We ask that all dogs are taken for a walk prior to their appointment to allow adequate time for toileting.
At the time of your pet’s admission, you will be invited to arrange a convenient time for their collection. After their procedure, you will be contacted by one of the nurses to let you know how your pet is doing and confirm the discharge appointment with them. During this appointment, the nurse will explain what has been done and how to care for your pet in the following few days. We recommend post-operative checks either via video appointment or in person, approximately 2 and 10 days after most surgical procedures. Medical conditions are dealt with on an individual basis.
