We routinely vaccinate dogs against the following diseases and infections.

Core vaccinations*:

• Canine distemper – signs may include runny eyes, diarrhoea and hard pads becoming more severe as the disease progresses. A recent increase in UK canine cases from contact with wildlife or some imported dogs, demonstrates the need for vigilance in stopping this disease becoming more frequent.
• Canine hepatitis – affects liver, eyes and lungs potentially leading to blindness and bleeding disorders. It is a persistent virus which can survive for months in the environment.
• Leptospirosis – a water borne bacterial disease which can be caught by contact with infected urine (rats/badgers) or contaminated water sources. May cause vomiting, dehydration, lethargy, pain and kidney damage. Potentially infectious to humans.
• Parvovirus – still relatively common in unvaccinated dogs. Causes severe diarrhoea, weakness and long-term gut damage.

Other recommended vaccinations**:

• Parainfluenza
• Bordetella bronchiseptica

Parainfluenza and Bordetella bronchiseptica are more commonly associated with Canine Infectious Tracheobronchitis (Kennel cough) a disease that can cause severe symptoms including pneumonia. Very young or elderly patients are most at risk. These bugs are very persistent and may survive in the environment for several weeks. Infections can be picked up anywhere your dog contacts infected dogs, even at the park or doggy day care. As an alternative to the traditional intra-nasal vaccination, we now have an injectable version – please ask at the practice for more information.

• Rabies vaccination – for almost all travel abroad and return to the UK

Cats are routinely vaccinated against:

• Cat flu viruses – Feline herpesvirus (FHV), Feline calicivirus (FCV) and sometimes Bordetella Bronchiseptica. They can cause, congestion, runny eyes and nose, depression, anorexia and eye or mouth ulcers. Once contracted these may become lifelong infections.
• Feline panleukopenia virus – very similar to parvovirus in dogs, causing gastrointestinal signs, and may prove fatal in young or vulnerable cats.
• Feline leukaemia virus (FeLV) – associated with anaemia and various tumours, suppresses the immune system. Initial symptoms may be vague and non-specific.

Rabbits should be vaccinated against:

• Myxomatosis – transmitted mostly by fleas and mosquitoes, occasionally rabbit to rabbit. Causes nasty tumour swellings around eyes, nose and genitals. Most cases are fatal.
• Viral Haemorrhagic Disease (also known as VHD or RVHD) – both strains: 1 & 2 – A highly infectious disease often causing sudden death. Transmitted by biting insects or close contact. The virus can survive for months in an environment previously occupied by an affected rabbit. RHD 2 strain appeared in 2010 and is now the dominant strain across the UK.
